For over ten years, Yleana has been getting first-generation, low-income students to and through college with our pipeline of support. Our comprehensive mentoring programs ensure our students have what they need to be successful—from the very beginning of their college journeys and as they navigate the workplace.

Following their experience in Yleana’s flagship program, Yleana Leadership Academy, students are enrolled in a series of mentoring programs that provide resources, guidance, and support. Every year, a new group of students enter the pipeline, requiring college application support, while continuing students require new and additional kinds of mentoring as they face specific problems in college or begin to think about their careers.
Why Does Mentoring Matter?
For first-generation and low-income students, college may present a large personal and academic challenge. Without an experienced support system, or with more personal or financial responsibilities, students can experience obstacles that prevent them from getting into college—and more critically, through to graduation day. Yleana mentors, who take a personalized, empathetic approach, are there to address these obstacles and provide emotional support, advocacy, and targeted problem-solving.

College Access Mentoring
After students take their official SAT tests, they remain connected to Yleana to receive support for the entire college application process. Mentorship includes extensive, detailed college planning and advising service.

College Persistence Mentoring
Alums are matched with mentors in the summer before their freshman year of college to help ease the transition to college life, or can start at any point during their college process when they recognize that they need a little (or a lot of) help.

College-to-Career Transitional Mentoring
When students are in their final three semesters of college, our College-to Career Transitional Mentorship Program, launched in 2021 by our Young Professionals’ Council, guides college students and recent college grads through the transition to careers.
